Yes, the cranks are anodized. It is a bit a dilemma. Polishing it will take you some time, but in the end you will have a mirror shine result. The ano will be gone however. Personally I polished quite a lot Deore and XT cranks. Sometimes I only polished the front and left the spotless sides untouched. It will only be noticed when looking very carefully.
