The earlier full rigid ones do indeed make great commuters, often by simply changing the tires. Whenever someone posts an early lugged Stumpjumper it seems to draw oohs and aahs from the crowd, but for the most part I'd say the market hasn't gotten close to what it is for classic road bikes. That means bargains can be found much more easily but of course it's harder to sell them too.
