I had IT band syndrome but from soccer. You just gotta stretch that b* every single day. Have you rolled your IT Band? It helps a ton. Get a roller or a ball and lay on it with the side of your body right on the IT band. Just roll back and forth so the ball or roller literally rolls from your knee to your hip on the IT band, it helps 100 fold.
i'm gonna try that, the pain started just above my knee, then creeped down to just below my knee, and now it's aching in my hip a little. when i stretch it feels a little better, but i'm not sure if i should wait for the pain to subside before i start stretching. definitely going to get a foam roll and try that though.
