Thirty years ago, no one ever discussed the idea of "spinning." I remember when I first heard that racers maintain a cadence of 90 rpm, and I thought that was probably impossible. Obviously, things have changed now. People take spinning classes. Bikes are geared lower. Thank goodness!
When someone buys an old three speed, the first piece of advice we (that is, those of us on the forum who know and love old three speeds) give them is to lose the original 18T rear cog and replace it with a 22T. It takes five pounds off the bike, I tell them (obvious bs, but it makes the point, I think).
