I picked up a set of NOS Dura Ace SPD-road (not SPR-R) 7410 pedals/cleats and have a question. My intent was to use these with recessed cleat mount walkable shoes, as the SM-SH70/71 series cleats look very similar to the SPD-mountain 50 series.

On my web search, BikePro says these can be used with recessed shoes. Reason I'm asking is that the included Shimano instruction manual says do not use these with recessed mount, only surface. I really don't want to turn this NOS set into 'barely ridden' by trying them out as recessed if it truly is not going to work. I use SPD-SL for my surface mount and have no intent to use these that way.

Anyone with real life experience?
