My family is car light. I'm the one in the family though that rides all the time, year-round in the Chicago area. I put in about 8K miles each year commuting, plus a limited number of more miles for rec purposes. I don't think I have ever put in more than 10K miles in a year though.
I haven't driven since September of 2009 due to a DUI -- Dumbass-Under-The-Influence. I could drive now anytime I want, but the great thing that happened from that is I realized just how damn fun it was to bike everywhere and it seemed to solve a lot of problems like:
1) No gas expenses
2) No auto maintenance expenses
3) No auto insurance premiums
4) No parking fees
5) No traffic up-your-*ss headaches
6) No contributing to greenhouse effect
7) Health
8) HEALTH
9) HEALTH!!!
Why go back?? My lovely girlfriend drive's me places when I really need it.
