and the body becomes very miserly when its put into a deficit, so when, during the day, food is consumed has a great effect. Food consumed late in the day, before bedtime, tends to counter all the hard work done during the day, in weight lose.
I find what works best for me is to make real conscious decisions on everything I consume, when I needed to lose weight. So if I 'cheat', it's a deterrent towards the next attempt, and makes me reaffirm my commitments to intake control.
If one eats like a 170 lb person, then one becomes a 170 lb person.
nitpicking calories never really worked for me.
cutting out 'unnecessary' calories has always been a more successful approach.
