There's nothing wrong with fg touring if you know what you're doing. But I wouldn't complain about the "advice" (why the quotes?) provided by those who tour regularly, especially if one is "planning" but hasn't yet tried touring (have you?).

To the op, have you toured before? It's a really, really good idea to get some touring experience on a geared bike before going fixed. That said, if you're doing several short trips, you could readily get your feet wet geared and use the experience to determine what gearing works for you and how best to pack light and fixed-friendly.
