I still don't think it sounds like the OP did anything really wrong. But where I ride, the roads are often so trafficked, that we try to ride as far to the right as humanly and reasonably possible, avoiding the center line to the extent possible, because drivers who see us on the center line too often become irate, and we become victims of road rage.
