They don't seem to have a problem drafting the tandem when we pull into the wind.

There's no inherent reason that a tandem team can't ride safely on a competitive group ride. You can either handle your bike, or you can't.

Some of the best rides we have down here are our Summer holiday rides (Memorial day 4th of July, and Labor day) where the really fast people come out on their tandems and drive the pace.

Having raced crits on the tandem, I think we can handle the tandem well enough on a town line sprint not to be a hazard to ourselves or others.
