I know this is going to sound crazy. But maybe, just maybe the OP should go talk with the fitter in question and see if they inspire $250 worth of confidence or can (and should) provide references. Discuss your problems and see what they advise. If you can't afford the fit, tell them so and see what they can offer you. I know the guys that do fitting locally including the BG certified guy. I think you'll find they're cyclists who'd like to help even if you aren't made of money.
