Soapy water will need to be washed out and the grips (and bar) allowed to dry completely. The WD-40 would need to be degreased and washed and dried.
I actually use soapy water for installation as well. Although the grips do slip around for a few days, they firm up in position quickly. Doing it this way 1) allows the grip to go all the way on without a struggle, and 2) allows easy rotation to the right orientation. The key is to use just a very small amount.

Agree about the WD40.
