I've posted this advice so often here it should be a stickey. On any bike that old that hasn't been ridden in a long time the bearing grease in the hubs, headset and bottom bracket is very likely to be completely dried out and useless. Riding the bike in this condition will rapidly ruin the bearings. Disassemble, clean and regrease all of these bearings right away.
