Doesn't really matter much how far, but 40-50 miles is probably average. Just whatever you feel like. The point is to load up, ride somewhere, and spend the night. A break in the routine between tours.

I usually don't ride from home, preferring to load all into my truck and drive somewhere I haven't been before. Park and ride off for a day or two on a roundabout.

Takes a couple of hours to assemble my gear into a touring package.
