I didn't like kickstands, but I have since changed my mind. I don't actually use the one mounted on my bicycle very often, but it's nice to have it when there's nothing secure to lean my bike up against. As for chainstay damage... I took a piece of old inner tube and cut a hole in the center for the kickstand bolt. It's now in-between the kickstand and the chainstays and hopefully protecting my paint (I hope, anyway).
