Texas allows a parent taught course for drivers license and allows parents to opt their child out of an on the road driving test at the DMV.

I too took a semester long drivers ed course... it was an "elective" at the high school I attended back in late '60s-early 70's. This was in Texas. My son had no such option in CA.
