Well you can solve the first problem with good lights ... and as for the second problem, actually, I disagree that the danger of getting hit by a car is much higher at night. The reason is that if you are covered in reflective gear and have got a couple red blinkie lights, a good headlight, and maybe a helmet light, you are much more visible to drivers at night than you are in the day. I've been told several times that I can be seen from quite a distance away at night.
