As far as I know ticks and other bloodsucking insects use heat and carbon dioxide as homing beacons to identify targets. Ticks typically wait on leaves or branches waiting to drop on deer but a rider on a bicycle emits about the same signature.

I wear long pants and boots in the woods and long sleeved shirts. Light colors don`t discourage them but make them easier to spot and brush off.
