^^Lupin and I have the same strategy...Make buddies with the local "bro" shop owner, trade flat fixes and minor labor for shop time.

I own a minor mechanics tool box for while traveling to races:

Chain Tool (buy the 3/32" tool, it can be used for both 1/8" and 3/32" chains)
Wrenches
Socket Wrench
Allen Keys
Tire Levers (Pedros as well)
Bike Pump (generic off eBay)
Spoke Keys

Everything else can be borrowed *wink*
