Actually, the shifter portion works on the same principal to the Sram X3 trigger shifters on my bike. They are my preferred way to shift a flat bar bike. You are the first person I've ever heard refer to units like these as brifters. I wouldn't worry about the brand, as they are definitely an upgrade from the stock gripshifters. Schwinn has sold some flat bar bikes with similar integrated brake/shifter units, such as the Schwinn Tourist with Shimano RapidFire 8 speed integrated shifter/brake units.
