I don't think it is quite right that a number of the posters are giving the OP a hard time about having his tire changed, almost blaming him for having temerity to take a bike to the shop for such a simple repair. Bottom-line is that the shop charged a lot for the job and didn't even do it right. Getting the end caps right is one of the things you should just do right when you are a professional shop. A shop that can't pull that off doesn't deserve repeat business...who knows what else they are sloppy about. The lack of communication and general indifference is just icing on the cake. Bike shops do vary in their personalities, though. The annoying ones are too cool for customers or you have to buy a Trek Madone every 1-2 years to get noticed. People talk a lot about establishing some regular relationship with an LBS to get good service and treated well. What is this? The bike shop should want to establish a good relationship with me so I keep going back. I avoid a couple LBSes and go out of my way to go to a different one just because the good one treated me with courtesy (that's it) on my first and subsequent visits.
