Well I fixed it and I thought I'd finish the thread out in case anyone finds it of use.

Decided to take out the bottom bracket as it was the only way to see what was going on.

There was in fact no cable housing to protect the cable so little wonder it snapped. Pic attached.

Fitted some cable housing and it shifts super smooth.
