For example: Older BMW (of your choice with a solid motor), do your typical add ons to get it breathing better / running smoother, then play around with some suspension to get it riding better. I'll tell you that IMO a 'quick' car that handles great with a proper suspension is more fun to drive around than something that is only fun in the straights. Just my opinion though. Plus, most of the basic 'add ons' like coilovers / wheels / engine bolt ons will be a nice start for you with less knowledge / tools. A good way to ease into something more time consuming / harder.
