It's a mix of both, but the problem seems to worsen with increasing sticker price. Whenever I drive, I get tailgated mostly by luxury/performance cars and cowboy Cadillacs. When I ride, the worst offenders are the luxury types.
I also wonder if, they get ticked because they have time to think while behind a cyclist, about the the poor fuel economy of their luxury vehicle.

Infrontitis is a communicable mind-virus that can strike anyone, though. The infected become obsessed with getting in front of anything in front of them. I think it's mostly because they're insecure. When they perceive the vehicle in front of them as being lower class- less power, cheaper, smaller, older, etc.-they have to save face/show the other car (or cyclist) who's boss.
