I got the cheaper XD700 in 48/34. Same basic crank with less polished arms and rings. Absolutely no complaints. Like you, I swapped a 52/42 for it. I had to lower the derailleur, but the same vintage 105 setup works flawlessly. The front upshift is smoother if timed right, but it always goes.
