I use my Bebops with MTB shoes. I have to cut away part of the lugs on the sole near the ball of the big toe so that the pedal spindle (shaft) will clear the sole. The cleats are designed for 2-bolt mounts, and adapters are available for 3-hole mount shoes. Not sure what other considerations apply for road shoes. The original manufacturer's website has a FAQ page which may answer more of your questions, and an online version of the mounting instructions with diagrams, which addresses the sole clearance issue.
