The short version is that I have a pair of Mafac levers on my 76
PR-10 (w/ Mafac Racers). The left lever clamp is going. Does anyone know of a compatible, not-too-pricey clamp I can buy and use with these levers? I'd rather not buy a whole new set of Mafac levers for the clamps; and $29 (eBay/elsewhere) for replacement Mafac clamps doesn't strike me as sensible; I care about having the right looking components (non-aero levers, the right looking cranks)... but I don't care about the clamps!
Here's the longer version, describing how I (foolishly) have developed a temporary kluge of a solution that hopefully won't end in needing dental surgery:
I finally got around to cleaning/repositioning my brake levers yesterday-- I've slowly been cleaning/fixing/prettifying a 76
PR-10-- and noticed the rivet/solder in the clamps had rusted. If they've been holding, they'll hold, I thought. Right clamp reattached with the lever securely, but the left clamp kept tightening without getting totally snug.
So I removed the left lever, and saw that the lower part where the bolt passes through the eye had spread open. I don't know how best to describe it, and I can't take a photo now. The eye itself hadn't broken, but normally both the upper and lower eyes consist of two layers each, folded over and riveted or soldered.
Anyway, I don't have another bike to ride, and I mostly use this for driving around town or jaunts to the countryside-- so I kluged a temporary solution. I bought a $2 lever from a Target-like store, and clipped a short section of clamp into the right shape that when positioned inside the old clamp, it will lock against the tube and hold the part of the old clamp that was spreading apart closed.
I have been able to reattach the clamp now (with my kluge solution), and it feels solid. But I don't trust it, and I doubt it's safe. And I'd like to get a replacement ASAP.
