Very true! But riding safely on a sidewalk is not really riding to some people. Not in the sense that you aren't a valid rider to yourself, but in the sense that the type of riding that me and most of the people that I know do, cannot be performed safely on the sidewalk. If I am on the sidewalk and being safe, I am rolling slowly, stopping at crosswalks even when there's a green light and essentially acting more similar to a pedestrian. But if what I really want to do is ride my bike the best place to accomplish that safely is on the road.
