Back to the original subject: the Kinetic Sculpture folks have been building wheels that hold up under off-road abuse yet are light enough to float and be adequately human-powered. The wheels of the Spirit of the Muckle Flugga aren't spoked, but they held up well in competition and were the flotation system of the vehicle, too:
