I think you are right. An experienced cyclist with good background (knowledge) will be more accurate than a any third party's "system" barring a some type of power measuring device amd even then I wonder.

Sometimes my seat clamp bolts will loosen (attach to seat rails) or my seat post will slip while I'm riding and I can tell instantly something is wrong. The pedal stroke feels different and I can usually tell what has happened before I even look at it.
