I've raced with front spokes covered, but in general you don't want them covered for everyday riding because crosswinds can play havoc with steering.
with the front and rear discs, and tailbox, i cant honestly say i have any probs with steering, or buffeting, certainly nothing i cant handle.
and i live on an island, so plenty of winds, lol !
