I've never posted in the Road Cycling forum before.
I started riding SS/fixed years ago but now secretly laugh at all the kids who ride them trying to be trendy, even though fixed is a freaking blast to ride and I will always have one in the stable. I make it a point to fly past them at 2x their speed.
I secretly want to get my fixed back on the road, and work on my fitness/spin, but I'm too lazy to turn the wrenches on it. And too scared to tell my geared bike.
I love urban riding; being inches from moving cars, predicting peoples moves, bunny hopping potholes, hitting gaps, overtaking cars, flying down the yellow line in gridlock basically getting my adrenaline fix. But I rarely blatantly blow lights or stop signs and I ALWAYS give right of way at intersections.
I get pissed with people who ride in the gutter/far to the right/in the door zone, in my opinion (and experience) they are just inviting close passes and near misses by not asserting their right to be on the road.
I did a group ride once on some country roads in Delaware and was bored out of my mind (and a little bit over my head, as I was on a fixed gear). I kept thinking how fun it would be to take these country roadies in to the city and see if they could keep up there where you need more than just fitness.
I am getting bored with riding alone all the time but because of my riding habits in the city I rarely try to find people to ride with. I accept the risks myself but I could never live down someone wrecking and getting messed up trying to follow me through traffic.
When I do ride with others, I tone it WAY down and basically go into uber-responsible wilderness trip leader mode.
I love rain and winter riding, I get off on the challenge, the sense of accomplishment and the looks people give me.
I love telling people I don't have a car and that I ride everywhere, but goshdarnit a lot of the time I wish I had a car.
I don't baby my bikes, I ride hard, rarely wash them and don't care about scratches or chips in the paint. But they are almost always kept indoors when not being ridden.
