Re "broke", someone just getting started wrenching might say a mechanism broke because bolts fell out. Yeah, it's broke, but there's broke and then there's broke, if you take my meanin'. It doesn't necessarily mean the chainring itself cracked. Maybe it did, but that wasn't apparent from the photo. It's hard to believe that the chainring cracked; those things are pretty tough steel!
