Been riding off and on for about sixty years, I'm 66 now. After riding a really cheap French 10 speed that I bought new in 1971 with alloy wing nuts holding the axles in the drop outs I purchased my first good quality bike with quick release skewers in 1988, (still own and ride it around town). The LBS where I bought it showed me how to adjust the skewers and the other components and to do the safety checks. Still go back to the same LBS, Bicycles ETC in Huntsville Alabama, for parts and major maintenance work like wheel building/repair. This accident was not severe but it did reinforce that bicycles are inherently unstable and safety is not a area for complacency.
By the way I was sporting my "Plus 50" jersey during this event. Enjoying the C&V and 50+ threads.
