Question for the NYC folk - how safe are nyc parking garages?

I'm thinking of stopping in soho on the way down to Baltimore in August. The only thing is I'm going to have my bike on the bike rack. I'm thinking of taking the wheels off and looking it to the rack. Or is it still too risky? I'll try and fit the bike in the car, but not sure if it will fit with all my college stuff.
