I've been doing most of my miles singlespeed since recovering from a late season injury last year, and I've found that there's a technique for long climbs. I stand up, get a little bit forward of the cranks to put all my weight as leverage, and then it's just like walking up a set of stairs. If it's too steep for just my body weight to handle, then I'll lean the bike and pull the bars a bit. If it's too steep for that then I hop off and use the 24" gear. I use that more on the MTB trails.
