I put a "9 and 10 speed compatible" FSA Carbon Pro compact crankset on my bike with a nine speed chain and it worked horribly, providing no usable overlapping gearing between the two rings due to chain rub on the big ring when using the small ring with any of the smaller cogs until I spaced it out with some thin Wheels Manufacturing or LeTour chainring spacers (perhaps .4 or .6mm) made specifically to address the 9/10 speed compatibility issue.
