The real problem there is the people that don't have ID tend to be poor, and poor people are far more likely to vote democratically. Coincidentally ... the republicans tend to be the ones pushing for voter id, and the democrats are the ones that oppose it ...

As for how these people cash checks -- they rarely do. The poor use cash. As for buying alcohol and cigarettes -- once you look like you're 40, it's not so hard, and if you've had a hard life, you may look 40 at 25.

As for why they don't have ID, I don't know. It could partially be the cost (and really, if the only thing you really need the ID for is voting ... it looks like a poll tax) ... it could be that people think they have warrants and don't want to deal with the police or don't trust the police. Of course, I imagine that the reason given by the republicans is that they're all illegal aliens.

Side note ... I wonder if it's possible for an illegal alien to be a legal, registered voter anywhere in the US? I'm sure the knee jerk reaction is "of course not!" but the devil would be in the details of who gets to vote ...
