I got my first road bike about a month ago - a 2010 CAAD8 Tiagra on sale for £640 instead of £850 for the 2011 version...I love it to bits. I've put a few hundred miles on it now - I'm going to upgrade the brakes, but otherwise its a really nice ride.
Its far more capable than I am & will last me a long time.

I've been bitten by the Cannondale bug - I now want to replace my old mtb with a new shiny Cannondale as well
