Too bad a perfectly good wheel (and freewheel) was sacrificed in this process. I wonder if you will actually be able to fit an 8-speed cassette in there or not. There doesn't look like a whole lot of clearance.
Though it's hard to tell from the pictures, it looks like there was a spacer put on before the cassette, so 8/9/10 speed cassettes should fit.
