I kind of miss the Death Ride. I've finished it 5 times but haven't ridden it since they instituted the lottery and then swiped the ride from the local club that started it.
My first year doing it was the last one Alta Alpina was involved in - they definitely knew how to put on a ride. The rest stops and general organization are adequate now, but not at the same level they used to be. Alta Alpina now runs a double century over the same roads and passes, plus a few extra, in early June. Friends who have done it rave about it - I'm not quite ready for a double with 20k of climbing!
FWIW, they've dumped the lottery and now it's just a first come, first serve registration process through Active.com and they don't seem to sell out right away, so I'm not that sure the lottery was ever really necessary.
