Agreed.

I've been fitting in one "hill" ride each week, for a few weeks, instead of doing my normal 24 mile flat ride.

There's 2 big hills on it (well, big to me), which always forced me to gear down to 22/21. Yesterday for the first time I was able to tackle the first one on 22/19, and the second one on 22/17. I was very pleased with myself, and I think that after a few more weeks I may be able to tackle them using 32/21
