Some people use a cheap (a few hundred or few thousand dollars depending on your finances) spare car for that so there's always one waiting at both ends of the commute in case the weather gets bad or they need to work late.

Insurance can be very reasonable with multi-car discounts (IIRC net cost to add a truck to my policy with liability only was about $100/6 months)
