Okay, now that I think about donuts, I believe I will go ahead and plan a century starting in Virginia, riding through Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia again.

The morning would feature a stop at the bakery in Jefferson, MD. Did someone say donuts? As in mmmmmm donuts? Then we should ride through Burkittsville MD, not stopping to look for the Blair Witch's house lest we get lost. Then Antietam, Sharpsburg, and the riding on the C&O towpath downstream to cross the Patomac at Harper's Ferry. We could grab a sandwich in town then go laugh at the kayakers for a while before cruising up a stretch of the Shenandoah Valley with (I hope) views of the Shenandoah River. Now the real fun begins, with a steep climb up and over the Blue Ridge, followed by a glorious long descent bringing us to Purcellville. I wonder if they have ice cream in Purcellville! It's a busy town but I've always liked it.. Then on to Waterford, which is a little jewel of a town, followed by another climb, this time over Catoctin Mountain. Don't worry about that, it's nothing compared to the Blue Ridge, and on the other side there will be beer.

I believe I can make this happen some time in the fall, such as October. It's a four hour drive for me, and at some point I have to make it anyway, driving a van down from NJ. If there's interest, I can plan to get a van big enough for some bicycles. It would be possible for Washington, D. C. people to ride a MARC train to a station 4 miles from the start/end point.

And note, I'm probably not going to mention this again publicly. Anyone interested should send me a private message.
