Been a subscriber for several years. I'd say Velonews is pretty much focussed on pro racing. They do have a column on training and a small amount of gear review, but (other than the annual equipment issue), not much. Alternatives might be Asphalt, but they haven't published an issue in a while so I'm not sure if they're still in business.

If you can read French and are willing to pay extra postage, there are some awesome French cycling magazines.
