Bikes: 1984 Club Fuji, 1970 Schwinn Continetal, 90's Roadmaster ATB, 2003 Raliegh C40

I still ride my 1984 Club Fuji (mainly because I don't want to shell out the cash) and although it is a few lbs heavier, I don't feel like I'm really held back. I don't know how many speeds you bike has, but a newer wheel set might make it lighter and more responsive. Changing out only my rear wheel on my Fuji when I recently converted to seven speed STI reduced my weight by one pound and the wheel was an older RX-100 level. Or you could possibly add a carbon fork - this would help with ride quality too. If your budget is that high and since you commute, maybe you should think about steel, such as the Raleigh Clubman...
