Well if you cross the chain badly obviously the 3 steps lever wont work. I have used both and I have a centaur ultrashift too and even using scape i never had problem just setting the FD in the right place because I don't suffer of a terrible disease (or bad custom) called "i like to ride with the chain super crossed".
