Disc brakes work and work effectively. Never had a problem on downhills as we use the accepted method with disc brakes of letting speed build up- then braking hard to bring speed down- when speed builds up again, we brake hard again. Then again we have never taken in the mountainous drops that some people have to. If a constant brake to keep speed down is required, then Disc brakes are not the ideal.
