noob question: bike shorts vs. regular athletic shorts

Hi all,

I'm new to cycling. I just picked up a Trek 1.2, and have been riding the ever-loving hell out of it.

At the moment, I'm riding in standard athletic shorts and boxer-briefs. I'm riding at least a few hours a day, and have definitely experienced some soreness in my sit bones. I know that a bit of this is to be expected as I get used to riding. It seems like padded bike shorts would help, but I'm nowhere near in good enough shape to pull off anything skin-tight. Is there anything looser that would still offer some padding, or am I just as well off sticking with normal shorts until I feel comfortable wearing legit bike shorts?
