if you're just riding on ploughed roads, which is most of the main roads, then 23mm tires are doable.

they'll croak at the first hint of packed snow, however.

I hated the rolling resistance of my W106, so I ditched the rear and used a 23mm slick there. I never really needed studded tires on the main roads. It was only when going into residential roads where it became necessary.
